A Short, Sharp Story That Will Give You Strength- Guaranteed
I was at the junior rugby club annual ball chatting to a mother of one of the boys. We were talking about young girls and first dates. And she told me something about what happened to her during her ‘dating’ years that really struck and surprised me. It’s a powerful message for our lives and business success. At the very least, it will make you pause and reflect.
Liverpool Football Club toured Asia and Australia last month and the YouTube video of the packed grounds in Jakarta and Melbourne roaring out the Liverpool song is just amazing…. That chorus…”YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!” And it reminded me of what Sophie told me at the rugby dinner. It all links.
“Every time a boy would ask me out my father would insist they pick me up from home and that they meet the family,” Sophie told me. “But why did he insist that?” I asked. And her answer- so simple- is the key to giving yourself strength, whenever you need it. Her father’s view about the would-be beaus was this:
“They need to know who stands behind you.”
Simple. All of us have certain people who ‘stand behind us’… who will be there when we need it, who throw their weight and essence behind what we do, who are part of our offer and who we are, who are rock solid.
For many of my company’s businesses, my company itself is something powerful that ‘stands behind them’, and which gives them confidence and credibility when pitching for work against other agencies. They have the backing of a strong, diverse, proven, substantial organization, and this means a lot to potential clients looking for certainty and confidence, and to minimize risk.
For each of us, we have our ‘rocks.’ In business, they might be peers, bosses, mentors, partner companies.
And in life, well- we all know who stands behind us… or do we? We have family, and a small group of friends, and then maybe one or two surprising rocks who would be there if needed. Do you know who stands behind you? Do you appreciate it? Do you make sure they know you appreciate it?
And do you know who you stand behind? And do they know it?
Remember- “You’ll Never walk Alone”. Be clear who will be walking beside you. Don’t take it for granted. And make sure those you will walk alongside know you are there for them.
Not sure that all made sense or worked- but, for me, the job is done. I really liked “They Need To Know Who Stands Behind You.” It has given me strength, and food for thought. I hope it has somehow, in some small way, resonated with you. Did it?
