Do This In 2016 And Thrive

This one piece of advice will bring you the biggest results, pleasure, success and well being in 2016. I promise you that- hand on heart. Here it is.

Welcome back, Possums friends. Hoping your festive season was happy, safe, fun. Mine was. Family. Sun. Exercise. And working on my priorities for 2016. I got very focused on what one thing I could do in 2016 which would have the most positive impact. Then I recalled what advertising icon Peter Meads had told me was the secret to business success. Here it is. I reckon it’s the most potent insight I could give anyone this year. Agree?

Relationships, relationships, relationships.

It’s as simple as that. “If you can develop relationships. anything is possible,” said Peter, who co-founded the great British agency Abbott Meads Vickers.

So I won’t waste any more of your time here today. Except to suggest this:

1. Use the next 10 minutes to get real clarity on the five professional relationships you need to work on in 2016. What can YOU do to make them stronger, more authentic, valuable (both ways), sincere, inspiring, warm?
2. Do the same for your personal life and most intimate circle- of family and closest friends. Who are they? How can you make them closer and stronger?
3. Then think of five other people you’d love to be closer with- to have a stronger bond and a part of your life. How can you achieve that in 2016?
4. Finally- your ‘community’… what can you do in 2016 to get one step further involved and to make a difference to the communities you are part of. Step up and do more. Give more. Want nothing back in return. Get clear on what this will be.

As your career progresses, you realise the very best thing that has come from it are the relationships you have built. This is what makes it worthwhile.

When I was starting my new business, The Savage Company, in August last year, I got very focused on what my ‘real’ pupose was…for me. The clarity came: “To build enduring, valuable relationships.” That’s why I get up every day. That’s what gives me my buzz. That’s what inspires and lifts spirits. There is nothing bettter than bonded relationships. These are the people who will walk through my door when many others are walking out.

“If you can develop relationships, anything is possible.” Make 2016 the ‘year of the relationship’ for you. Give it I go. Please! I will be. That’s for sure. I can’t wait!

Hi Chris, loved the advice you gave at Marketo’s event last year. The great advice continues, will be investing in the relationships that matter this year – and discarding those that don’t. Wrestling possums always puts a smile on my face so thank you ☺️

    Hi Chris,
Great advise. Thank you. Getting involved in community activities can be as simple as making time to join your local religious community and lending a hand in community events/activities they’re involved in. One will be amazed at how you’re humbled and start connecting with people who respect and appreciate your “community work”. True friends are found and relationships are established.
