The 5% Secret To Powering Your Career
If you want to have an incredibly successful, vibrant, long-lasting career, then please- there is no need to be a 100 percenter. All you need to be is a 5 percenter. Here’s why.
I’ve just returned from the Cannes Creativity Festival. I paid my own way. No pointy end plane trip and five star hotel paid by a cosy corporate master. Just me. Backing myself. The reason I’m doing it is because of that secret to career longevity and success. Do this, and thrive. Here it is:
Know more than 5% than anyone else in the room.
Yes indeed. The secret to staying relevant, wanted, needed, growing is as simple as that.
You see, what got us here in our careers won’t get us there. Things are changing too fast. It’s a struggle to keep up with it all.
Here’s the bad news. ‘Keeping up’ is not enough. We must stay one step ahead of change if we are to remain current, at the edge of our industries, relevant, value-adding, a contributor.
‘Staying one step ahead’ is a big statement. What does it mean? How to do it? How to maintain it?
All it means is to ‘know a little bit more than anyone else in the room.’
You don’t need to know 5% more about EVERYTHING!!!
Just focus on your area of expertise – your core capability set – the stuff YOU bring to the party. That’s where you have to keep ensuring you know 5% more than the others. If you do, you have a place. You bring value. Colleagues and clients look to you as a sage-like figure who understands the mysteries of the future. You know stuff they don’t. You provide a trusted compass-point on what to do next, and what not to do.
(Reminder! If you want to stay 5% ahead as a leader, don’t forget to register here for the FREE ‘Crack The Leadership Code 2016’ online series… launching this week. I am joining 28 global leadership leaders, including Marshall Goldsmith, on this powerful series, hosted by the brilliant Michelle Pizer. The series started on 12 July, but has two weeks to run. Register now! Remember- it’s FREE!!!)
Attending Cannes every two years keeps me there. I meet people, smell the trends, suck in the learning, grab ideas, inject inspiration, fill the tank with insights and ‘sound-grabs’, and come home at the edge of disruption in my industry. It fuels my toolkit – my counsel, ideas and energy. And keeps me in the room another two years.
I do other things too to keep ahead. The list is long. But that’s not the point. Here’s the point:
What do YOU do to keep 5% more knowledgable in your key capability area than anyone else in the room?
Are you doing it consistently, persistently, with relentlessness and vigour?
If not, get started. What got you here won’t get you there. The young guns are coming to eat you. ‘Catch me if you can,’ I yell at my would-be usurpers, thumbing my nose at them and laughing into the wind as they chug along in the wake behind me.
They haven’t caught me yet. One day they will. That’s a fact. But not yet. Not yet.
How about you?
