We Love You, Steve
Some say Bill Clinton is the world’s most seductive human being – because of his deep listening and storytelling skills. It’s not true. Steve is. Here’s why.
Steve Lyons passed away in a Kuala Lumpur hospital 16 years ago last week. PK was holding his hand. Mine was on Steve’s knee. He was surrounded by love. And all those who knew him and hear his name today still feel that love- just as deeply as we did all those years ago. Why? Quite simply this:
Steve had the gift to make each of us feel very special.
I can’t remember what Steve said, or what he did, but I absolutely remember how he made me feel. Awesome. Invincible. Anything was within my grasp. He pumped our tyres and gave us all optimism and hope.
Steve was one of those rare people who looked at the world from your point of view, and was completely focused on you and your wellbeing.
When he was dying, and the word spread across the Asia region that PK and I were on our way to see him, we were inundated with messages to pass on to him…from Scott in Beijing, and AV, and so many others. And they all began :”Tell Steve please that if it was not for him, I would never have….”
He inspired dreams, fuelled courage, lifted spirits. He made you want to live up to the exaggerated description he’d tell others of who you were and what you could do.
I think of and thank Steve often. For how he made me feel, and for the way I feel about him today.
His kid brother Andy and I have become social media friends, and no doubt we will meet soon, in Des Moines, Iowa, and eat cheese burgers, and talk of Steve.
We’re remembering and celebrating you this week, our dear, dear friend. From PK and I, and all who love you, thank you for putting us first, and for leaving such a massive legacy of people grateful to you, and who will love you always.
