We’re all ‘brands’, whether we like it or not. When your name is mentioned in business, those there get that instant feeling about you- their perception of you as a professional brand. Personal brands are not stagnant- when you start a new role or get promoted, you have to start again with your brand- and build it afresh. Here’s how to do it.

A knight to remember- this changed my life

I just learnt something so powerful it has profoundly changed me. It’s an insight I wish I had known 35 years ago. It would have changed my life’s path, and is changing it now. Here’s what a very wise man told me….

His name is Ken Robinson. Sir Ken to be precise. He’s an educator. A thinker. An inspiring speaker. It was David Ogilvy’s 100th birthday. And the auditorium was packed with 2,000 communications industry executives from around the world, eager to hear Sir Ken’s 40 minutes on ‘how to become more creative.’

In the midst of his speech, Sir Ken shared the insight that has changed my life. It’s so simple, so obvious. Yet- I’d never realised it before. Now that I do, it dominates my thinking about what I do, how I can be happier and how I can contribute more.

What the air hostess told me that changed my life

Whenever I sit on a plane, and while the safety demonstration unfolds, I am reminded of the most powerful advice I have ever been given by a stranger. It changed the way I live and work. Maybe it will do the same for you?

Her name was Christina, or so read her Air Hostess name tag. She was doing the safety demonstration. When it came to using the oxygen masks, she explained how adults should first affix theirs before helping their children put masks on.

“Why should we do that?” I asked her when she had finished.

Her reply changed me forever.

University of Pennsylvania president Amy Gutmann wrote: “The challenge of leadership is not to fit in. It’s to have combined passion with purpose, and the most inspiring and successful leaders, I think, don’t fit in.”

A friend once asked the guy next to him on a plane what he did for a living.
“I’m one of tennis player Andre Agassi’s three backhand coaches,” the man replied.

WOW! Three backhand coaches! Agassi was clearly a guy who feasted on feedback. And they say feedback is the food of champions. The lesson is clear.
