We Love You, Steve

Some say Bill Clinton is the world’s most seductive human being – because of his deep listening and storytelling skills. It’s not true. Steve is. Here’s why.

Steve Lyons passed away in a Kuala Lumpur hospital 16 years ago last week. PK was holding his hand. Mine was on Steve’s knee. He was surrounded by love. And all those who knew him and hear his name today still feel that love- just as deeply as we did all those years ago. Why? Quite simply this:

Possums Special Edition: Comment On The Big News From America

This Trumps Every Other Motivational Idea

Were you as shattered this week as I was with the worst news we could possibly have received from the USA? Fear not! Here’s a message of hope that trumps everything else.

What terrible news! So sad. Inevitable, yet it has left me with shoulders slumped, optimism a little squashed, and a touch of fear and extra loneliness in my heart. No. Nothing to do with Donald Trump. Everything to do with the passing at age 82 of my mentor and guide, Canadian musician and poet Leonard Cohen.

Cohen made me feel it was okay to feel the way I feel. Does that make sense to you? It does to me. You see, Leonard Cohen was one of those rare people in my life. They deliver powerful juice that fuels optimism and hope. Here it is.

Why Being Romeo Sucks

I am outing myself as being somewhat of a Romeo. Hard to believe given my Danny DeVito shape. But it’s true, and here’s why being Romeo sucks.

Settle down! This is NOT an X-rated expose. It’s a story challenging you about who YOU are. Many fine people screw this up. When they do, they hurt others, and themselves. Those hurt keep wondering: “Why? What have I done to you to deserve this?” First, a thought from Oprah Winfrey, and then my explanation:

Why I Told My Work Colleague I Loved Him- And I Meant It

I was taken by surprise this week. Shaking the hand of a colleague at a meeting’s end, I looked him in the eyes and said: “Arthur- I love you.” I meant it. And, he did not immediately phone the HR department ‘hotline’ for urgent counsel. Here’s why. And why it made me feel so energised.

I am struggling to do up my business shirts these days. No excuses. Just binge eating under pressure. But I’ve turned the corner (fingers crossed), and have started exercising again. While ambling around a park last week, I was listening to, aptly, Meat Loaf. One of his most famous lyrics jolted me…. when Mr Loaf suggests ‘… two out of three ain’t bad.’ And the jolt was the realisation that, quite simply, it’s not true.

Here’s why. I had an intriguing meeting the next morning- with a ‘dynamo’ younger colleague I mentor (he mentors me too), who was seriously thinking about taking a client-side senior role. I was not sure how to handle the meeting- what to say- and it was Mr Loaf who gave me the answer. He reminded me of this deep truth:

The Secret To How To Motivate Others- And Yourself

I flew to New Zealand recently. A colleague flew likewise an hour after me. “Hey- I watched “Blue Velvet” on the flight- what a movie!” he told me. And then there’s me. You see, embarrassingly, this is what I did for those three hours. But please- don’t tell anyone. Shhhhh.

I spent the flight to NZ searching for my blibula spot.

Are you brave enough to truthfully identify and share what your ‘blibula’ spot is? Huh? What’s that? Calm down. Relax. This is what it is. “It’s a spot on a dog’s stomach which when rubbed, causes his leg to rotate wildly.” The Brand Guy told me about it.

When I fly on business, on the way to my destination, I always try to work – non-stop. I used that NZ flight to source material for a new workshop on ‘Brand You’ I am presenting to one of our companies in a month…. three hours reading an awesome book- “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There- How Successful People Become Even More Successful,” written by Marshall Goldsmith. And here’s the key to what it told me.
