The Bikie’s Secret Of Success

A bikies’ powerful advice persuaded me to turn down a juicy project with a prestigious corporate. Madness? No. It’s the path to success. Here’s why.

I have been trying hard to focus on fewer, bigger things so I can build the business model I want for this next phase of my career. Two months ago I resigned 50% of my revenue to ‘clear the decks’ and enable a calmer, more strategic approach. But I still agree to do stuff I should let go of. After all, bills have to be paid. Then the bikie shared his unusual counsel:

How To Win Without Trying To Win-A Secret to Business and Career Success

I am in the midst of the most terrifying role I have ever had- coach of an Under 10 fourth grade rugby team. And it is teaching me massive lessons about life, business and success- no more so than what happened this past Sunday. Read on- you’ll never forget this message.

When I reluctantly agreed a few weeks ago to coach the local Under 10 fourths rugby team, I dusted off notes taken when world record undefeated Brisbane Roar soccer coach Ange Postecoglou spoke to our leaders meeting 18 months ago. I had NO IDEA how to approach coaching rugby, or indeed coaching under 10s! But I wanted, as always, to do the best I could do, particularly for this enthusiastic young team.

Now- luckily, Ange knows his stuff. Deep in my notes was the magical insight I am using (with co-coach John) to help this team build confidence, improve, and have fun. It’s an insight absolutely relevant to driving business or career success. Here it is.

Why Coming Second Will Help Ensure You Win- Every Time

I have always believed to succeed in business, ‘being first’ would be a bloody good place to start. But I was wrong. The fact is, coming second, or even third, is critical to succeeding in business and often, in life. Here’s why.

Malcolm Gladwell spoke about it at the Cannes Creativity Festival in June 2011: how innovators often are not the ones who end up commercializing their innovations. Rather, someone else sees it, tweaks it, refines it, popularizes it, and makes a fortune out of it. Think “Steve Jobs , the mouse, icons and stealing Xerox’s great ideas…” Jobs stole the ideas and made them great. He made a fortune out of this.

I liked the concept, but did not really understand the point, until I read this great quote from an Australian rugby union legend, John Eales, who said:

Know This Nightmare?

The agency is flat out on big projects. Midnight oil being burnt. Pizzas being ordered late at night. Everyone’s on edge. Then, suddenly, several projects come to an end concurrently. You check out the revenue forecasts for the next three months. Oh dear. There’s a big black hole in identified client work and revenues. But your salary bill does not drop with the revenue, unless you take drastic action.

So-you call an urgent new business meeting (you used to have them weekly before they fell by the way side when you got busy- remember?). “What’s on the list?” Oh double dear. Not much. CRISIS! You need a robust, relevant new business list, fast. But how do you select client targets where you will get their attention and get a meeting?

Here are five proven ideas to get a robust pipeline list of targets together, fast.
