The Three Vital Ingredients To Happiness- At Work, and In Life

Woody Allen once said something like “80% of the secret to success is just turning up.” I ‘turned up’ once to a talk by someone billed as ‘the world wide expert on happiness.’ I left an hour later a changed man. And have had a much happier life ever since. Here are the three key tips I learnt that day.

His name is Dr Martin Seligman. He’s the Director of The Positive Psychology Center at The University of Pennsylvania. In essence he’s spent much of his career researching and helping people suffering from depression. Through this work he gained deep insight into ‘happiness’ and resilience, and has shaped theories around this which I wanted to hear more about.

So one cold winter night I went with my brother-in-law to his lecture in downtown Sydney. It was life changing. This is what he told us.

Nike and the F word: How to motivate yourself into action

Warning! This post contains a naughty word. No-not ‘profit’. This one starts with F, and ends with K. But it’s a relevant story- one I only recently heard, and which has had an immediate, dramatic and positive impact on my effectiveness and productivity.

Productive, successful executives are those able to consistently tackle and get done difficult and big challenges. How do they do it?

Frankly- I don’t know, but I do know how I get more of the important things done, and recently learnt a great additional tip from a book by fitness guru Michelle Bridges, who made her name as the fitness coach on the TV show, “Australia’s Biggest Loser.” It’s a fabulous tool to increasing our performance- every time we have a tough job to do.

The secret to achieving your goals every time

‘Success is steady progress towards one’s personal goals’- well, that’s what my fortune cookie from The Peacock Gardens told me last night.

Achieving goals is a daunting journey littered with setbacks. Yet watching our 8 year old son learn to play rugby has reminded me of the secret to reaching goals. Simply put, he refused to tackle. No matter how much I yelled, begged, bribed, cajoled- he could not bring himself to do a tackle. Until someone whispered the secret in my ear.

It’s the secret that has helped me to dust myself off when I’ve failed, and has kept me moving forward. And it’s a secret that works whether you’re 8, or 50.
