Why I Love To Be Rubbished

When the boss of one of the biggest communications groups in the world rubbished me and my reputation for a full 10 minutes, why was my reaction one of delight and high fives? Here’s the answer.

A former colleague had a meeting with the boss of one of the world’s biggest marketing communications groups. Let’s call him ’The Boss’, with apologies to Bruce. A mutual associate beamed down the phone: “Our friend told me The Boss spent 10 minutes of their meeting rubbishing YOU.”

I was bemused. I’d never even met The Boss. I was far down the pecking order when our worlds were vaguely associated. How and why on earth had he even heard of me? Then I remembered what I had done to give him the absolute shits. You see, as I have got older, I have become obsessed with boldness – in saying what I really think and feel, and doing what I believe is the right best thing to do, irrespective of the consequences. I am in Cape Cod tonight, having just finished dinner with Artist Steve. Three years ago he was a failed marketing guy. Unemployed. He spent his time painting seascapes. He sent paintings to a friend who had bookshops in Berlin and Amsterdam. “Now exhibiting across Europe” the banner triumphed across the gallery window. Steve sold $600,000 in paintings last year. Eleven years ago this week a great friend died by my side in a hospital bed in Kuala Lumpur. I want to remember him today. Importantly, to remember the one thing about Steve that was insanely unforgettable. Read this post of his death, life and future, and you will never forget it. Promise.

A great leader is someone who knows how to inspire. Genuinely inspire. With time we forget what they said, we forget what they did, but we NEVER forget how the made us FEEL. Eleven years after his death, I remember crisply, clearly, vividly… how Steve Lyons made me feel. Invincible. Unbeatable. A king. A star. Wanted. Supported. And he made me feel loved. As he did many people across the region.
